DAS Training & Test

The DAS (Direct Access Scheme) course is for those 21 years old or over, the training and test will be conducted on a 500cc or 600cc bike. Once you have passed the test you can ride any size bike without any power restrictions.

Due to the Driving Standards Agency’s decision to break the motorcycle practical in to two modules, it is now more complicated and slightly harder to pass your test.
We feel that we have structured our training courses to give you the best opportunity to pass your test first time and in the most cost effective manner. Whenever possible we will try to incorporate part of your module 1 training at the actual test centre where you will be taking your test – this is subject to availability and at no extra cost.
Our aim is to get you up to test standard and beyond during your training, so while other training schools may appear cheaper at first glance, be realistic of your abilities and be aware of what is included in the price.
If you require any more information or have any questions, please do not hesitate to give us a call or pop in and see us.

The practical test consists of two modules.

The first part, Module 1 will take on average 22 minutes and is conducted on a purpose built site.  The examiner will assess your control of the bike including;

Pushing the bike
Slalom
Figure of eight
Avoidance test
U-turn
Slow riding
Emergency stop

Those candidates who have passed Module 1 will receive a Test Pass Certificate which they must bring with them when they take Module 2.

You must pass Module 1 before taking Module 2.

Module 2 of the test will be about 57 minutes in length and will consist of the eyesight test, road safety questions and at least 30 minutes of road riding. Consisting of a road ride covering a variety of road and traffic conditions and will also include normal stops, hill and angle starts.

The first thing you'll have to do is take an eyesight test. This involves reading a number plate in good daylight at a distance of about 67 feet (20.5 metres), so if you wear glasses please bring them with you.

You will then be asked two motorcycle safety check questions, one ‘show me’ and one ‘tell me’. One or both questions answered incorrectly could result in a driving fault being recorded.

When you're taking the test the examiner will follow you either on a motorcycle or in a car. The examiner will give you directions over a radio.

You will pass if you show that you can;

Ride safely
Comply with correct road procedure
Obey traffic signs
Carry out the set exercises correctly
Your examiner will watch you and will be looking to see if you
Make appropriate progress along the road
Keep up with the traffic while keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front
Show confidence and good judgement
Choose the correct speed for the type of road, density of traffic and weather
React correctly to road signs and speed limits
Be aware and react correctly to what other road users are doing, including pedestrians, cyclists and animals.

You should not be over-cautious. For example, you must not ride too slowly as you could be holding up other traffic and you must not stop and wait when it's safe and normal to proceed.

When you get back to the test centre the examiner will ask you a question about carrying pillion passengers, then  the examiner will let you know if you have passed.

The national average first time pass rate is approx 65%, our trainee’s have a first time pass rate of over 80%.

Before you can take your practical motorcycle test you need to have successfully completed Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and to have passed your motorcycle theory test.

We run training courses 7 days a week, so if you want your course to run over weekends to fit around work or during the week, we are quite flexible, though the test day is always during the week.
