MOTORCYCLE TRAINING INFORMATION - COVERING NOTTINGHAM & DERBY
Depending on your age and the type of motorcycle you want to ride, there are up to three steps to obtaining your licence. If you just want to ride a motorcycle as learner, then all you need is CBT . The CBT allows people 17 and over to ride a learner legal motorcycle up to 125 cc (typically capable of about 65 mph), which will at least allow you to keep up with traffic.
CBT certificates are valid for two years, if after that time you still wish to ride a motorcycle as a learner, then you will need to retake your CBT (after 2 years and every 2 years). However, most people should aim to pass the full motorcycle test even if they don't want to ride a bigger bike. Insurance is typically cheaper and you wont need to keep retaking your CBT.
There are basically three types of full motorcycle licence (A1, A restricted and A), depending on the size of bike you take your test on. All tests are exactly the same and now require a theory test pass before you can sit the test. If you take your test on a learner legal 125cc bike then you will be able to ride any motorcycle producing less than 33bhp. After two years you will be able to ride any power motorcycle. If you want to go directly to an unrestricted bike, you will need to be 21 or over and opt for a Direct Access Motorcycle Training course. In this course you learn and take your motorcycle test on a larger bike (typically a 500cc motorcycle).
If you are 16 and have just received your provisional moped licence, then you will need to do CBT before you can legally ride. WHAT IS A MOTORCYCLE CBT? CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training. If you wish to ride a motorcycle, or under go any form of motorcycle training, the starting point will be for you to pass your motorcycle CBT. This is a course run by training bodies approved by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). As a DSA approved training body we can hire or loan both bikes and safety equipment. Your Motorcycle CBT is a one day course in which you will undergo motorcycle training on and off the public highway for you to gain knowledge and adequate controls of a motorcycle, it's clutch and it's gears.
After passing your Motorcycle CBT you will be able to ride upto a 125cc motorcycle as long as "L" plates are displayed on your motorcycle
All learner riders must complete CBT before riding on the roads.
-
CBT pass certificates issued before 1 February 2001 will be valid for three years from the date of issue. Those certificates issued from 1 February 2001, will be valid for two years.
-
CBT will have to be re-taken if both theory and practical tests are not passed within the Certificate life.
CBT must be completed before riding on the road by all learners who are resident on the mainland Great Britain, and connected islands. Residents of all other islands will be exempt from the need to take CBT, but only if riding on roads which are on an exempted island.
A CBT certificate issued in respect of a course completed on a motorcycle or sidecar combination or a moped with more than two wheels will restrict the provisional riding entitlement (or full moped entitlement on full car licence) to such vehicles.
Once you have successfully completed CBT, and have your Certificate (DL 196), you can carry on to take additional training to pass your tests and qualify for a full motorcycle or moped licence
